Do you think "The Message" distorts The Bible?

John 10:30

English Standard Version "I and the Father are one." The Message "I and the Father are one heart and mind." John 14:28 English Standard Version "...the Father is greater than I." The Message "...the Father is the goal and purpose of my life."

John 6:44

English Standard Version No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. The Message You're not in charge here. The Father who sent me is in charge. He draws people to me--that's the only way you'll ever come. Only then do I do my work, putting people together, setting them on their feet, ready for the End. The Message is not intended to be a translation per se. Rather, it is an interpretation. I'm certain there are some distortions, but when I read the Message in combination with NASB, I find it helps me see things differently.

So, The Message does not have the historical scriptural authority that the Bible has?

I agree with Trey... The Message is not a translation, but an interpretation. It can help one see things differently, but it is not historical or scriptural authority.

Why do you highlight "him/he" and "people"? Why do you emphasize the gender issue?

There is a loss of clear emphasis on the Father drawing an individual person. "People" is plural here, referring to a group.

It’s not about gender; I think translators are playing around too much with this gender issue and are trying really hard to go with the flow of this modern day culture. By being so sensitive about the gender issue I think the message of the Bible is being distorted.

Yeah... I see what you mean. There is definitely a problem with the singular being made plural. They could say "He draws A PERSON to me" though, and I think that would be a good non-distorted translation.
